Outdoor lighting for darker evenings: light the route and control the glare

An effective entrance lighting plan makes the journey home easier while keeping light where it is useful.

With the clocks going back on 25 October 2026, the evening approach to your home deserves a fresh look. A bright fitting beside the front door may still leave the gate latch, steps or turn in the path difficult to see.

Walk the route from the gate

Review the entrance after dark from the position of someone arriving with shopping, guiding a child or using a mobility aid. Identify changes of level, the door lock, house number and places where shadows make the route unclear.

Note what each light needs to do. The objective might be finding a keyhole, reading a step edge or seeing someone at the door. Include these observations in the electrical work brief before selecting the fittings.

Direct light towards the task

The Institution of Lighting Professionals’ July 2026 obtrusive-light guidance emphasises avoiding unwanted light. Consider the view from neighbouring windows and the street as well as your own doorway.

Choose the position and direction with the installer. A fitting that looks attractive in daylight can expose a bright source at eye level once mounted. Review samples or product information for how the light is directed, rather than comparing brightness alone.

The best entrance light helps you see the next step without becoming the thing you notice.

Make the controls fit daily use

Discuss when each light should operate and how you will control it when guests arrive. The ILP’s domestic exterior lighting guide recommends aiming detectors within the property and checking adjustments at dusk.

Separate adjustment of the sensor and light can help the installer direct illumination where it belongs while avoiding unnecessary triggers. Agree convenient manual controls and a demonstration, so the finished arrangement works for departures as well as arrivals.

Coordinate installation and the final check

Use a qualified electrician to assess the supply, suitable outdoor equipment and installation requirements. Plan the cable routes before paving, planting or decorative work is completed, and retain sensible access for future maintenance.

If the entrance itself is changing, bring the lighting brief into your porch planning. After installation, walk the whole route again at dusk and check glare, shadows and sensor coverage with the installer. Small adjustments belong in the handover, not on an unfinished list.
