How much does it cost to swap a bath for a shower?

Around £1,300-£2,000 buys a standard bath-to-enclosure conversion in a UK guide. A shower over the existing bath and a walk-in design have different price tags.

Replacing a bath with a conventional shower enclosure typically costs £1,300-£2,000 in Checkatrade’s June 2026 UK guide. Its example covers taking out the bath, fitting the tray, enclosure and shower, plumbing changes and wall tiling. Keeping the bath and adding a shower and screen is around £500-£1,000. A walk-in shower in the bath’s place averages £2,500. Ask for a VAT-inclusive quotation because the guide gives no VAT basis. Compare the three conversion costs.

What will the old bath reveal?

Look at the wall directly above the bath rim. If the existing tiles stop there, a shower tray will expose a strip of bare wall. A few matching spare tiles may cover it. If the old range is discontinued, a full-height contrasting panel can be easier to finish neatly than a conspicuous patch.

The floor deserves the same question. Have the fitter mark the new tray outline on the existing plan. Any footprint left uncovered needs a finished floor, and the tray itself needs sound support. Ask how any rotten or damaged flooring found after strip-out will be assessed and priced.

Ask for an entry height in millimetres.

If getting over the rim of the bath is the problem, the final step into the shower matters. The waste route and floor construction affect how low the tray can sit.

Which fittings and finishes are included?

Specify the screen opening, tray, shower valve, controls and wall covering. Check that you can reach the controls without standing under cold water. Ask who provides the waterproofing behind a tiled shower and how it joins the tray. BAL explains wet-area waterproofing.

Where a household has one bathroom, agree when the toilet, basin and shower will each be available. Clarify who disposes of the old bath, makes good the ceiling below if access is needed and returns to seal the enclosure. Our plumbing service and walk-in shower planning guide can help you prepare the scope.
